Hugh King & Co has taken delivery of a new 473 Volvo L150H loading shovel for its Hullerhill sand and gravel quarry at Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

The loader has been put in charge of the main yard duties around the plant, and joins a smaller Volvo L120H, that looks after the bagging plant at the quarry.

The L150H is powered by a Volvo 13 litre Stage V-compliant engine, developing 300hp, coupled to Volvo designed powertrain components. This combination is coupled to other fuel saving devices, such as the Volvo Eco pedal, which encourages the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve and optishift with torque converter lock up.

“We’ve been operating Volvo equipment for a good many years and found the loading shovels to be consistently reliable and productive machines,” said operations manager Charles Hughes. “The L150H with its 4.2m³ rehandling bucket is the optimum sized loading shovel for most of our requirements here at Hullerhill, and is proving to be a good performing all-rounder as an extraction tool, as well as loading out high sided bulkers."

The new loading shovel has had Volvo’s Co-Pilot load assist option installed at the factory. The Co-Pilot option allows the operator to calibrate his bucket via the touch screen pad in the cab. Bucket loads and the number of buckets filled can be recorded, in addition to the system storing an array of product menus. The Co-Pilot touch screen automatically becomes a rear view screen when the machine is put into reverse, interacting with the rear view camera. In addition, the Co-Pilot system is linked in with the Care Track system – Volvo’s telematics system, which can feed back information to a remote location.

Hugh King & Co. has been producing silica sands, mortars and renders of the highest quality for over 160 years, supplying the whole of Scotland and the north of England, besides all of the championship golf courses in Scotland.
