Piling and civil construction activities are now well underway as the project enters the next phase of its development.
Located at the Port of Tilbury in Essex, southeast England, this state-of-the-art grinding station and storage facility represents a significant investment to support the ambitious growth plans for the AIUK cement business.
Due to complete on site and be fully operational in 2026, the Tilbury facility will allow the firm to supply customers 24 hours a day with conventional, low carbon and circular cementitious materials from five loading heads.
The primary objective in this strategic investment is to fulfil the increasing demands for sustainable building materials within an evolving market.
As well as providing a major import hub, the development investment includes new plant equipment for manufacturing blended cements and lower carbon cement components, including GGBS and alternative raw materials from construction demolition materials.
In line with the company's sustainability strategy, the project demonstrates Aggregate Industries' ongoing commitment to lower carbon construction. In particular, the project boasts a significant commitment to circularity principles, ensuring that wherever possible, all potential construction demolition materials are being re-used or recycled.
To date, more than 10,000 tonnes of asphalt have already been removed from the site to make RAP through the business' local surfacing solutions facility. A further 25,000 tonnes of concrete has been reclaimed and consumed in the construction of the facility itself. Aggregate Industries is also incorporating lower carbon materials throughout every aspect of construction; including the use of ECOPact readymix, the firm's own green building solution.
"We are excited to reach this crucial stage of the Tilbury Grinding Station project," said Steve Curley, managing director, Aggregate Industries Cement division.
"This milestone not only signifies the start of civil construction but also highlights our efforts to lead in sustainable construction practices. We are proud to contribute to a more sustainable future through innovative approaches and responsible resource management.
"As we move forward with the construction of the Tilbury Grinding Station, we remain committed to our sustainability goals and to delivering high-quality, low-carbon products that support the evolving needs of the construction industry."
