Lafarge launches new Ukraine quarry

Unigran is investing in new equipment to meet demand from its Ukrainian Malin granite quarry. Rapidly rising demand for aggregates in the Ukraine has helped double production at Unigran's Malin quarry over the last six years to reach 2million m3 per year. The company is expecting calls for material from the granite quarry to continue rising and is investing in both new equipment and its workforce to meet this.

CRH, the international building materials group, has reached agreement to acquire Lafarge-owned Mykolaiv Cement for an upfront cash consideration, including debt assumed, of €96 million. With the addition of Mykolaiv Cement, located in the Lviv region of western Ukraine, CRH says it becomes the market leader in Ukraine, allowing it to further leverage the benefits of the new Podilsky factory.

The Lafarge group of companies (France), jointly with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), has established an enterprise producing road metal and sand goods with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes/year in the village of Ispas (Vyzhnytsky district, Chernivtsi region), Ukraine. Following the completion of works on a new RWF 126.70 billion (€157.97 million/US$175.81 million) facility, Rwandan cement maker Cimerwa is targeting the regional export market.
The plant will boost the capacity of Cimerwa, Rwanda’s only cement maker, by 500,000tonnes, from its current 100,000tonnes to 600,000tonnes/year. The local market needs 450,000 tonnes, hence the balance of 150,000 tonnes is expected to be export to the DR Congo and Burundi.
