Caterpillar lays off 120 temporary workers in Texas

November 8, 2019

Caterpillar has laid off 120 workers in Texas following its decision to cut production in the wake of president Donald Trump’s trade war with China, says Reuters.

The Illinois-based manufacturer said in October that it was cutting production after sales fell across all product segments and in most regions in the latest quarter.

A company spokeswoman told the news agency that the temporary workers were laid off at a hydraulic excavator facility in Victoria.

Caterpillar’s sales in Asia-Pacific fell 13% as it faced falling demand in China and competition from domestic competitors while revenue in North America fell by almost 3%.

Henry Guajardo, who runs local workforce development agency Workforce Solutions, said dozens of workers have come to his office seeking help since Caterpillar notified his agency about the layoffs.
