Engie supplies Cemex UK with 100% renewable electricity

January 3, 2019

Energy group Engie is supplying Cemex UK with 100% renewable electricity across all sites in 2019 as part of a carbon reduction strategy.

The electricity is based on renewable energy sources such as wind power and is underpinned by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, a certificate which provides a transparent mechanism to track renewable electricity through the grid.

Martin Hills, head of energy and carbon at Cemex in the UK, says: “Cement manufacture is inherently energy-intensive and we work hard to minimise energy consumption within the process constraints.”

Additionally, Cemex UK is expected to generate extra revenue by utilising Engie’s demand side services, such as load management to avoid peak tariffs and rapid frequency response. Engie manages all contractual requirements with the National Grid on behalf of Cemex UK.

Engie has been providing electricity to over 150 Cemex UK sites for more than ten years while also supplying gas to 33 of these sites.

Nicola Lovett, divisional CEO of business energy & services at Engie, says: “Our 10-year partnership with Cemex UK has delivered major cost and environmental benefits, while also generating additional revenue for the company. Our ability to provide 100% renewable electricity represents another important step forward in addressing CEMEX UK’s sustainability commitments.”
