Volvo Trucks refine VNX range for heavy-haul operations

March 28, 2018

Volvo Trucks has launched its refined VNX Series to help meet the needs of heavy-haul trucking operations. The vehicles are designed with the intention of providing the necessary power and performance for applications such as logging, heavy equipment transport and long combination vehicles.

The rugged series is available as a VNX 300 daycab configuration to help offer the strength and manoeuvrability required for local heavy-haul applications while the VNX 400 flat-roof regional sleeper is said to be built for occasional overnights. Additionally, the VNX 740 comes with a 70-inch sleeper and interior enhancements for heavy hauls over long distances.

For additional safety, the VNX series' cab is built with high-strength steel while the Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology intends to monitor parameters to detect loss of control, jackknife or rollover events. The system, according to Volvo Trucks, automatically reduces engine torque and selectively apply the brakes to help keep the vehicle on course.

Automotive-quality headlights are equipped with the intention of improving visibility while automatic lighting and rain-sensing wipers are included for operator safety.

VNX's optimised dashboard is said to reduce distraction by displaying critical information that a driver needs at a quick glance by grouping frequently used controls within easy reach. A configurable colour driver information display with enhanced graphics operates with steering wheel-mounted controls to offer key operating information. Users can also choose their preferred diagnostic data.

These trucks feature a Volvo D13 engine with 500 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with the 13- or 14-speed Volvo I-Shift with Crawler Gears automated manual transmission.

John Moore, Volvo Trucks North America product marketing manager – powertrain, said: "The performance and reliability of the Volvo D13 engine has been proven through billions of miles and on jobsites all around the world. The Volvo D13 engine with 500 horsepower, 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque is a beast and the perfect pair with the Volvo I-Shift with Crawler Gears for serious heavy-haul jobs."

Chris Stadler, Volvo Trucks North America product marketing manager – regional haul, said: "The new VNX is the ultimate blend of Volvo's modern, aerodynamic design and pure purpose-built performance. From end-to-end, every feature of the VNX is built to stand up to any heavy-haul job you throw at it. Improvements are easy to see throughout the VNX including the bumper, axles, suspensions, braking, powertrain, and more."
