DG Khan Cement profits increase 20%

Post-tax profit of DG Khan Cement, one of the leading cement producers in Pakistan, in July-December 2015 increased 20% on-year from PKR 3.39 billion (€28.84 million/US$32.46 million) to PKR 4.08 billion.

Net profit of the company in October-December 2015 increased 5.35% from PKR 2.24 billion to PKR 2.36 billion. Revenue of the company during the quarter increased 8% on-year to PKR 7.39 billion.

Pakistan’s Fauji Cement profit up 67%

Fauji Cement of Pakistan posted an on-year increase of 67% in net profit to PKR 2.77 billion (€23.56 million/US$26.53 million) for July-December 2015.

The amount of deliveries increased in October-December 2015 by 24% on-quarter to 751,000tonnes, resulting in a turnover increase of 27%.

Net profit of the company in the same three-month period increased 52% on-quarter from PKR 1.1 billion to PKR 1.67 billion.

Cementir's 2015 EBITDA above target at €194.4mn

Cementir Holding, the Italian cement and construction materials specialist, has approved its 2015 preliminary results.

The company has achieved an EBITDA of €194.40 million, up by 1.3% and above the €190 million target; operating profits of €98.5 million, down by 5.3%, and revenues of €969 million, up by 2.2%.

Malaysia: Tasek’s revenue up, profit down

Cement producer Tasek of Malaysia registered a 7% year-on-year increase in its revenue from MYR 656 million (€140.42 million/US$158.07 million) to MYR 702.5 million in 2015, while its pre-tax profit decreased from MYR 136.32 million to MYR 119.82 million.

Revenue and net profit reported by Tasek in October-December 2015 alone stood at MYR 188.40 million (up 8.9%) and at MYR 18.47 million (down 33%), respectively.

The West Yorkshire, England market town of Otley recently bid farewell to one of its biggest personalities following the death of former Blackhill Quarry ‘security guard’ Arthur McCoy, aged 86.

Egypt’s IDA to issue cement licences

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) in Egypt will issue licences for setting up cement factories in El-Wadi el-Gedid, Beni Suef, Qena, South Sinai, Aswan, Sohag, Minya, Marsa Matrouh and Suez governorates in Egypt.

The bids deadline have been set on 10 May, 2016.

So far, a total of 37 companies have applied for the coal-fired cement plants' licenses. The plants will have capacities of 2 million tonnes/year.

Indonesia looks to use steel slag waste in concrete

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry is partnering the Ministry of Public Works to conduct research on using steel slag waste as an ingredient for asphalt concrete mix.

It is claimed that the use of steel slag waste, though more expensive, will increase the strength of concrete by 400% compared to the use of limestone.

Slag can also be used as sand blasting for paving block and painting ship docks. However steel slag is still categorised as toxic and hazardous waste.

Eurocement Group raises cement prices by 8%

The Eurocement Group in Russia has raised the retail prices for cement by 8%.

The share of the company in St. Petersburg market and the Leningrad region is estimated at 60%.

The prices for Eurocement Group's products will increase by RUB 300 (€3.39/US$3.81) per tonne and the average price for cement in the market will increase to RUB 4,500 (€50.81/$57.20), as a result.

The concrete producers, which are the primary customers for cement, will also have to raise the prices for their products.

UK scientists developing cement for nuclear storage

A new form of cement that will be used to cover nuclear waste buried in deep underground stores is under development.

The research team is led by Claire Corkhill of Sheffield University, England.

The cement has to withstand the intense radioactively of nuclear waste as well as harmless elements such as water. It is estimated the amount of intermediate nuclear waste in the UK will have swelled to around 300,000m³ by 2030.

Ulyanovskcement dismisses 236 employees

Ulyanovskcement, part of Eurocement Group, located in Volga Federal District, dismissed 236 employees or 31.5% of the staff, by mutual agreement of the parties between November 2015 and January 2016.

The reason for the redundancy is decrease in demand for cement.

Currently the workforce of the company consists of 514 employees.

The company reported that it produced 1.35 million tonnes of cement in 2015, which is 20.6% less than in 2014.

Ethiopia’s Habesha Cement's shareholders agreed changes

During the fourth general assembly, shareholders of Ethiopia-based Habesha Cement agreed to the demand of the Industrial Development Corporation, South African Cement Company and Pretoria Portland Cement Company to revise the company's Articles of Association to allow majority shareholders to determine who is going to be on the board of directors.

The three South African companies have been on Habesha Cement's board of since 2013 while the United Bank of Ethiopia has one board seat.

HeidelbergCement reports preliminary figures for Q4 and 2015

HeidelbergCement has substantially increased its operating income in 2015, as predicted in its 2014 annual report.
