Last time Nieder-Ofleiden's basalt quarry near Marburg in Germany hosted 465 Steinexpo in 2005, the country's construction and quarrying sector was still in the grip of a decade-long recession. But since then the market has been revived and returned to growth, plus demand in Germany's Eastern European neighbours has also taken off dramatically.

This change in fortunes means that the mood at this year's Steinexpo - due to be held between 3 and 6 September at Nieder-Ofleiden - is likely to be much more optimistic than three years ago. Already more than 180 exhibitors have confirmed their presence at the show and some have already revealed what innovations will be on display.

Event organisers Geoplan are also gearing the show up for more visitors both from Germany and further afield. In recognition of this the event website is now also available in Czech, Russian, Polish, Turkish, French and English, as well as German.

Extraction

Vermeer Deutschland is planning to demonstrate a less conventional method of rock extraction with its TL1255 terrain leveller, which can be used as a surface rock cutter. The company's managing director Konrad Schied said, "Up till now the existence of such a machine in practical application is not well known but can be used to cut basalt and was only believed by those who have seen the machine in operation. We will make this experience possible by demonstrating the machine live during the trade fair." 385 Atlas Copco is also planning to reveal its latest development at the exhibition but would not be drawn on the details. "All I may give away is that we will surprise you," said Atlas Copco head of department for above-ground drilling equipment and rock-drilling equipment Dieter Koß.

Sandvik will be debuting its new DP1100i top hammer drill rig, which is the latest model in the company's Pantera range. According to the company, the rig offers good performance and fuel economy combined with an easy to use design.

Crushing and screening

435 Kleemann has announced that it will be displaying its MC 120 Z jaw crusher which is the latest model to join its Mobicat range. The new tracked machine has been designed for the quarrying market with a 1.2m by 0.8m inlet and a feed capacity of up to 400tonnes per hour. The crusher will be joined on the stand by Kleemann's Mobiscreen MS 16 D mobile screening unit, which features wireless remote control and has a capacity of 350tonnes per hour.

Sandvik's crushing and screening equipment will also be presented and will share space with its subsidiary companies Extec and 4085 Fintec, which are making their Steinexpo debuts. Sandvik's CH660:2 hydraulically adjusted cone crusher, CL2152 double-deck linear screen and UH440i secondary crushing unit will be on display along side 4242 Extec's E-7 and E-5 screens and C-12+ mobile jaw crusher and Fintec's 1440 tracked impact crusher and 542 and 640 screens. According to Extec, the machines will be demonstrated working in series at the show.

Austrian-based 3167 Rockster Recycler will also be showing its equipment under 'live' conditions. Central to its display will be the R900 impact crusher and RS83 screen box, which the company claims are ideal for both recycling and quarrying applications. The company will also show its Duplex-system which enables either the R900 or R800 models to be transformed from an impact crusher to a jaw crusher within hours.

Another Austrian-based company, DSB Innocrush, will also present a new machine at the show - the IC30 which is the smallest mobile impact crusher in the company's range. According to DSB, the 30tonne machine can offer a maximum capacity of 300tonnes per hour and can be used for recycling and virgin aggregates.

Posch mobile mining will also be displaying its mobile crushers and screens alongside its latest dosing, mixing, conveying and storage systems.

The company's mobile crusher range is particularly interesting as they feature a patented hybrid drive system that the company claims can reduce the fuel consumption by 25-50% compared to conventionally powered machines.

The crusher design has also been streamlined to minimise the transport weight. Also new from Posch is the FlexGrizzly which allow rock for coastal defence projects to be washed and processed in-situ rather than transporting it to a fixed processing plant.

Loading and hauling

439 Liebherr will be demonstrating its heavyweight presence in the quarrying sector with the 86tonne R 974 C HD and 75.4tonne R 964C S-HDS excavators on display at the show. These machines will be joined by the 5.5m3 bucket capacity L586 and 4.5m3 bucket capacity L576 wheeled loaders.

Germany's 395 Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin will also have a range of machines on display at Steinexpo and the line up will include the 988H wheeled loader, a 365 excavator, an F series rigid dump truck and the H series grader.

473 Volvo will also be exhibiting at Steinexpo and will have its range topping L350F wheeled loader on display along with its 70tonne EC700B excavator. Chinese equipment manufacturer 4334 Sany will also be present at the show through its German partner Bodo Global.

Consumables

Panolin will be displaying the benefits of its Kleenoil by-pass filter system which the company claims can extend service intervals as well as prevent wear, reduce breakdowns and maximise uptime. The system works by eliminating potentially abrasive or catalytic contaminants from the hydraulic system. The system will be on show along side the company's rapidly biodegradable HLP SYNTH oils.

Improved machine performance is also promised by Filterjet's air filter cleaning system and visitors to Steinexpo will be able to see the system in action. According to Filterjet inventor Johann Mairleitner, the closed air filter cleaning system not only increases the life of the filter but also helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Measurement

Vega Grieshaber will be unveiling its latest radar sensor systems for level measurements of bulk solids at the exhibition. The company claims that the Vegaplus 67 and 68 offer great technical advantages over traditional ultrasonic and plumbline systems as they are not affected by dust, noise or high temperatures. The small sized sensors can easily be retro fitted onto conveying systems to monitor crusher feeds or volume measurement.

Vega will also be introducing its Plicsradio transmitter and receiver which allows wireless transmission of data from the sensor to the control system. According to Vega, the wireless design makes it ideal for use with mobile plant.

Industry representation

While the main focus of the show is on equipment used in quarrying operations, the event also includes displays from the quarry operators themselves and organisations representing the industry.

The German aggregates association Bundesverband Mineralische Rohstoffe (1514 MIRO), which represent 80% of the country's aggregates producers will be supporting the show. The organisation's stand will demonstrate the range of policy, planning and technical issues it campaigns for and provide insight into the German industry.

Germany-based quarry operator Basalt hopes to draw attention to the range of products and services it offers and will have live stone sculpting by artist Martin Hintenlang underway throughout the exhibition.
