his year sees Italy's tri-annual Samoter construction exhibition, held in the city of Verona, move to a new date in March and looks set to be larger than ever before. According to the show's organiser, Veronafiere, exhibits at Samoter 2008 (5 to 9 March) will fill 30% more space and visitors are expected to exceed the 95,000 recorded in 2005.

With dates for the show in 2011 and 2014 already confirmed, VeronaFiere has said that it is well positioned as one of Europe's three exhibitions in the construction sector, being held in alternate years from 386 Bauma and 432 Intermat. With around 1000 exhibitors, the event offers visitors a chance to see the latest equipment 'in the metal' in Europe. In addition, it also provides insight into best practice in the construction sector with a seminar programme, which this year focuses on safety issues.

As in previous years, exhibits at Samoter are split into applications and the quarrying machines will be on display in Hall 7 and outside area F, while drilling equipment is in Hall 3 and outside area H. Earthmoving equipment will be located in Halls 1,2 4, 5 and 6 and outside areas A and B.

Many new machines are expected to be launched at the show and details of some, such as those from 395 Caterpillar, will not be released until the exhibition opens. 430 Indeco plans to use the exhibition to launch its newest hydraulic breaker - no performance details of the unit are available ahead of the unveiling but the company has said that it will be the largest hammer it has ever produced.

Some manufacturers have chosen to give visitors a preview of the range of machines that will be on display.

Centre stage on 394 Case's stand will be the new 1221E wheeled loader, which has been developed through the company's agreement with 429 Hyundai. The 7m3 Case machine is based on 429 Hyundai's HL780-7A wheeled loader, and firmly places Case machines in the quarrying sector.

Also on display at Case will be the 22.7tonne CX230B excavator, which has been developed specifically for the Italian market. The machine features an articulated boom and is powered by a 117kW 3129 Isuzu engine.

439 Liebherr will also be exhibiting the latest addition to its crawler excavator range with the debut of the 32tonne R934C. The new excavator is powered by a 150kW Liebherr engine and, according to the company, the machine offers significant breakout force and working speed improvements over the previous R934B model.

The R934C on display at Samoter will feature a 2.1m dipper stick and 6.05m monobloc boom but is available with other combination and with a number of undercarriage options measuring between 2.4 and 3.4m.

Liebherr's wheeled loader line-up for the quarrying sector at Samoter will include the 25tonne L576 2plus2. The 200kW powered machine features Liebherr's 2plus2 transmission to give smooth power delivery and a high fuel efficiency, which Liebherr claims gives the machine a fuel consumption 25% lower than similar machines. The loader also has a 4.5m3 bucket capacity and an overturning load limit of 17.2tonnes.

One of the largest machines on Liebherr's stand will be the 70tonne HS845 HD rope excavator, which has been designed for use with a dragline bucket, material handling grab or sheet pile grab. The machine has a new design of telescopic undercarriage with 700mm track plates to allow the transport width of under 3m.

Hyundai will also be exhibiting excavators developed for the Italian market with the narrow track versions of the 21tonne R210NLC-7A, 29tonne R290NLC-7A and 32tonne R32NLC-7A. According to Hyundai, the machines have been developed to give the same performance as the standard machines but still comply with Italian transport regulations.

In addition, Samoter will give visitors the first chance to see Hyundai's new look cabins on its 7A excavator models and the first wheeled loaders to feature ZF axles with the added benefit of limited slip differentials.

6512 Hitachi's display promises more than 30 machines with the theme of versatility so although the new equipment on display falls into the utility and construction categories, there will be something of interest for the quarrying industry.

The next editions of Samoter are scheduled for 2 to 6 March 2011 and 5 to 9 March 2014 but VeronaFiere is planning a series of Samoter Tours to Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Romania and Turkey in the mean time n
