Granite was the most produced solid mineral in Nigeria last year with around 17.5 million tonnes, 38.12% of the total tonnage of solid minerals produced in the country during 2017.
In total Nigeria produced more than 45 million tonnes of solid minerals in 2017, according to mining and quarrying data from Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics.
Limestone was the second most produced solid mineral with nearly 14 million tonnes (30.5% of annual solid minerals tonnage), followed by laterite (3.7 million tonnes or 8.11% of tonnage).
Other solid minerals produced in significant amounts in 2017 were shale (2.8 million tonnes), sand (2.4 million tonnes), granite dust (1.9 million tonnes) and granite aggregates (1.6 million tonnes). Garnet (2kg) and Zircon (1kg) were the least produced solid minerals for the year.
Ogun State was the region producing the highest tonnage of solid minerals in the country with 23.3 million tonnes, 50.94% of total national tonnage for the year.
Kogi and Abuja-FCT (Federal Capital Territory) states followed with 5.2 million and nearly 4.5 million tonnes, representing about 11.43% and 9.75% of total tonnage produced respectively. The states of Bayelsa (zero tonnes) and Enugu (5.2 million tonnes) produced the least amount in 2017.
