1343 Hanson UK has completed a major investment at its Bellshill cement depot in Glasgow – transforming it into a dual product storage and distribution site for the first time.

Pipework has been replaced and a new silo monitoring system installed as part of the £1.1 million upgrade. The site has three silos: two for cement powder, transported by rail from our Ribblesdale plant in Lancashire, and one for the storage and distribution of ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS), manufactured at our Teesport works in Middlesbrough.

“The refurbishment took 17 months to complete and normal operations continued throughout,” said site operations manager Al Mcintosh. “There were no personal injuries sustained during the project and we worked very well with contractors Cape. The most important thing was being rigorous about the weekly meetings where we updated progress and ensured all health, safety and sustainability issues were addressed. The rail operation with our new rail partners GB Railfreight is also working well.”

Cement has been railed into Bellshill since 2007, saving in excess of 48,000 HGV movements.
