German building materials company 674 HeidelbergCement has announced a project for sustainable cement making at its Lixhe facility in Belgium.

The project, which has been granted funds worth €12 million (US$13.48 million) from the European Union, calls for the construction of a cutting-edge testing facility to study a new technology for the capture of CO2.

The five year project is being led by the LEILAC (Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement) consortium, which includes the Australian technology company Calix, HeidelbergCement, and other lime and cement producers.

In the first three years, the project will focus on deciding the design of the demonstration plant.

The pilot unit will go through two years of extensive testing later.
