Johan Claassen, interim CEO of South Africa-based PPC, has been named as the permanent CEO and executive director of the regional cement manufacturing giant.

Claassen, who was previously managing director of the South African firm, was appointed interim CEO in July 2017 after the sudden resignation of former CEO Darryll Castle.

“Since his appointment as interim CEO, Johan has overseen a number of important milestones including the successful stabilisation of the business, an improvement in efficiencies following the completion of key projects and the strengthening of PPC’s financial position,” PPC chairman, Peter Nelson, said in a statement.

“The board confirms the appointment and looks forward to working with Johan.”

Claassen has been with PPC for more than 28 years and has served as a member of the group executive team since 2013.

He will continue to lead a group that is expanding deeper into Africa following the commissioning of plants in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

PPC, which has operations in six countries across the continent, also confirmed the appointments of Njombo Lekula and Mokate Ramafoko as managing directors of South Africa cement and Rest of Africa cement, respectively.
