Plans for an eight-hectare expansion of 7235 Lafarge Tarmac’s Mountsorrel granite quarry in county Leicestershire, central England, have been approved.

Residents and environmental groups expressed concerns that the extension on land next to the existing quarry, one of Europe’s biggest, would impact on wildlife in ancient woodland beauty sites nearby. Local councillors backed the plans, provided that no ancient woodland is mined.

Lafarge says that the deeper Mountsorrel granite quarry goes the more difficult it is to remove stone, and it is reported there is an approximate 19-year supply left if it is mined at current rates.

Residents have also raised major concerns about blasting noise, dust and the potential effect of an enlarged quarry site on house prices.
