New research just published suggests that key heavy building materials markets in Northern Ireland are at their strongest levels since the turn of the decade.

Markets for asphalt, aggregates and ready mixed concrete have all increased, with one sector up by as much as a third.

The author, Andy Sales of consultancy 671 BDS Marketing Research, said: “There has been no analysis of these markets from any source since our figures issued in 2011.

“Our latest findings make positive reading for the industry as well as highlighting numerous changes to its structure.”

Major companies such as 723 CRH, 3144 Lagan Group and FP McCann feature strongly, holding market leading positions in asphalt, aggregates and ready mixed concrete production. There is some integration by a number of other companies, operating in two markets, with the remaining producers specialising on a single sector.

Over the last five years company ownership has changed including some no longer trading, acquisitions completed and new entrants to market.

In addition, some sites have closed and others opened.

The latest reports present an up-to-date picture of the size and shape of the three markets.

The findings are made available in three separate market reports providing estimated outputs and market shares for 2016. Each report identifies the companies involved and their operations on a county by county basis. Figures for every company are then summarised at a national level, with supporting commentary.

Further details of the report are available by contacting Andy Sales at +44 (0)1761 433035

BDS says that the independent report will provide essential reading for companies involved in the supply and movement of these materials, as well as industry observers and other companies looking to invest in the industry.
