Stamford Stone Company has acquired the Clipsham Quarry Company from former owner and managing director, Sue Thomas.

The acquisition makes Stamford Stone Company the sole supplier of Clipsham limestone worldwide and guarantees its reserves for generations to come.

The company currently operates the Clipsham Medwells and Greetham quarries, both on the famous Lincolnshire limestone belt in county Rutland, eastern England, and the Clipsham Quarry off Bidwell Lane has now been added to that portfolio.

The quarry currently has permitted reserves of just over 11 hectares, which at present are being worked by a third party, and an application for an extension will shortly be submitted to Rutland County Council.

“As a family business, we are passionate about the future of Clipsham limestone in the UK market and share the same values as Sue, who sees her family’s legacy carrying on through our business as a positive move,” says Laura Green, director at Stamford Stone Company.

“Last year we celebrated 20 successful years of supplying local stone so we are very excited about the future which now includes Clipsham Quarry Company.”

Sue Thomas says: “When Stamford Stone approached me, the time just felt right to sell. The sale will mean that the quarry will be looked after by a company who are passionate about the stone we produce here and all its various uses.

“I am delighted that the quarry will continue to operate and look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength.”

Daniel Wilson, director at Stamford Stone Company, says: “We have been working solidly over the last four years promoting Clipsham limestone to the industry as one of the UK’s premier limestones.

“ We’ve secured its specification in some very prestigious projects including the restoration of the Houses of Parliament; the renovation of the University Arms Hotel in [the city of] Cambridge; the new orangery at Grade I listed Rushton Hall in [county] Northamptonshire, and new development and restoration of historic colleges in Oxford and Cambridge.

“As we are now the sole supplier of this precious commodity, we can push forward with confidence, knowing we have control over the quality and specification of the supply.”

Clipsham Quarry Company will continue to trade under its existing name alongside Stamford Stone Company under the ownership of Stamford Stone Holdings.
