The operation was acquired from Kies- und Schotterwerk Kreuzfeld & Co on 14th August 2019. The existing subsidiary to Thomas Beton in Germany, KGS Kiesgewinnungs Sternberg, has since been renamed ‘Thomas Sand und Kies’ and will incorporate the Vierhusen site.
Long-term supply of local raw material is crucial for production of ready-mixed concrete. It adds to the quality of the final product and enables a more environmentally friendly production with short transportation distances.
“Sustainability has been our focus for many years. We are offering our customers a number of products with lower impact on the environment and we are continuously looking for improvement possibilities in how we are running our plants and transporting our products,” said Hans Karlander, CEO and president of Thomas Concrete Group.
The operation in Vierhusen, with a production capacity of 450 tonnes/hour, will be Thomas Concrete Group’s second raw material unit in Germany alongside the current operation in the area of Schwerin, region of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Material from the plant can be used for production of ready-mixed and pre-casted concrete, asphalt, railway construction, landfills and road construction. All personnel at the Vierhusen operation has become members of Team Thomas.
Thomas Beton has an extensive network of 26 concrete plants in Northern Germany. The sand and gravel operation expanded with Thomas Sand und Kies strengthens the Thomas Beton’s position on the market as one of the leading ready-mixed concrete suppliers in the region.
“Germany is an important market for Thomas Concrete Group. We have step by step developed and grown our German business since we first entered the market in 1965. With the addition of a second sand and gravel operation we can offer even better products and services to our customers as well as high quality aggregates to the regional market”, says Hans Karlander.
Thomas Concrete Group also owns 50% of an exporting rock quarry, Rekefjord Stone, south of Stavanger in Norway with the current production of 2.5 million/tonnes a year.
