The company says it will leverage a proven, reliable core of components with over 68 million hours of real-world experience and complementary technology to the C9.3B launched last year and now nearing production.
“Our customers expect reliability and durability, but they need it from a simpler, lighter package with more power and that’s what we’re giving them with our new engines,” says Jeff Moore, product manager for 7.2-18litre engines.
Designed to meet Stage V and Tier 4 Final emission standards, the six-cylinder engine combines upgraded air, electrical and after-treatment systems to produce a range of powers from 340-430kW and up to 2,640Nm of torque out of a package that is said to be 30% lighter at these performance levels, when compared to previous models.
Caterpillar says that increased performance is accentuated with transparent after-treatment regeneration to maximise uptime and improvements in fuel consumption, minimising cost of ownership.
“The C13B provides for all the critical success factors required by off-highway original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in all industrial sectors,” says Caterpillar.
As with all Caterpillar 9-18litre engines, the C13B will be offered in various configurations to provide OEM customers the flexibility to reduce the cost of installation.
Engine-mounted after-treatment (EMAT) and full Industrial Power Unit (IPU) configurations are offered out of the factory in Seguin, Texas, USA, while the company says remote-mounted after-treatment is also possible, with minimal installation requirements between the engine and after-treatment.
Caterpillar says it will also certify its existing Stage IV, Tier 4 Final engines in its C13, C15 and C18 product range to meet Stage V emission standards, needing only minimal changes to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) internals to meet the standards. Dual label certification, Stage V and Tier 4 Final, will be offered for its range of 9-18litre products from 250-597kW, giving customers the opportunity to commonise their products across regions.
Caterpillar’s DPF solutions in this range have over 282 million hours of proven performance in the field. There are no changes to customer interface points for existing products, allowing for a seamless changeover and enabling customers to focus on their own product improvements.
