Los Angeles-based Concrete-AI provides an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) platform that is claimed to be able to reduce material costs in concrete by 5-10%, and embodied CO2 by up to 50%, without compromising performance.

The cloud-based platform applies data analytics from machine learning to optimise concrete formulations by accurately predicting concrete’s performance as a function of its mixed design.

“Reducing the environmental impact of cement and concrete and improving energy efficiency is one of the most important challenges we have today when it comes to cutting emissions and making global net-zero a reality,” said Ian Riley, CEO at WCA.

Rley added that technologies like those of Concrete-AI address these environmental challenges and have a vital role to play in moving concrete to the age of artificial intelligence, benefiting the cement sector and WCA members around the world.

Concrete-AI says its mission is to accelerate the decarbonisation of concrete while ensuring certainty of performance, compliance with existing codes and standards. The company adds that it enables sustainability by optimising the use of cement, aggregates, and diverse supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in concrete, in an unparalleled manner by a data-driven approach.

“Concrete is by far the most manufactured material in the world but reducing the amount of cement in concrete would both increase profits and decrease the carbon intensity of concrete which is responsible for about 9% of worldwide CO2 emissions,” says Alex Hall, CEO at Concrete-AI. “Concrete producers have a singular opportunity to benefit from our platform that enables them to leapfrog concrete design at a low cost. We look forward to working with WCA’s members going forwards as the industry looks to reduce its environmental impact.”
