ASTM International is developing a specification which it says covers the use of colloidal silica, a versatile nanoparticle used in concrete that aids in durability.
Jon Belkowitz, director of research and development, Intelligent Concrete, says: “Practical applications for colloidal silica in concrete include everything from walkway pavements to building foundations. Colloidal silica will help end-users create a concrete mixture that has a longer service life without compromising fresh/hardened properties and getting grey concrete down the shoot and into the forms.”
He claims that the standard will give contractors, engineers, and architects more confidence in their decision to use it in construction projects.
ASTM’s concrete and concrete aggregates committee (C09) is developing the proposed release (WK60809).
