Cemex is to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 35% by 2030 and deliver net-zero CO2 concrete by 2050 as part of a new climate action strategy.
The goal is expected to support Science-Based Targets methodology, a requirement which climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Fernando A. Gonzalez, CEO of Cemex, says: Our efforts have brought significant progress to date, but we must do more. This is why we have defined a more ambitious strategy to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030 and to deliver net-zero CO2 concrete by 2050."
As part of the commitment, Cemex is using a CO2 roadmap which it says will accelerate the roll-out of technologies in all of its facilities. This will include investing in energy efficiency, using alternative fuels and increasing the substitution of clinker with alternative cementitious materials, the company adds.
