CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) has raised Cemex’s rating of B in 2018 to A- in 2019 following its commitment to climate protection.
CDP is an international non-profit organisation that directs the global disclosure system for investors, businesses, cities, states and regions to manage their impact on the environment
Cemex says this rating reflects its improvement in corporate governance, risk management, initiatives to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, low carbon products and participation in the value chain.
Vicente Saisó, corporate director of sustainability of Cemex, says: "Until now, we have reduced our net specific emissions per ton of cementitious products by more than 22% compared to our 1990 baseline, which leads us to meet our ambitious goals, aligned to science-based methodology, by 2030.”
Cemex claims it has reduced its direct CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious products by more than 22% compared to its 1990 baseline, allowing it to avoid approximately 8 million tonnes of CO2 during 2019.
Additionally, the company is carrying out the following actions to further reduce its direct CO2 emissions:
• Produce new types of clinker, cement and concrete products, all low in CO2
• Increase our use of alternative fuels as substitutes for fossil fuels
• Use waste from other industries as alternate raw materials to replace clinker
• Expand and protect natural carbon sinks, from our El Carmen Nature Reserve to all our quarries
• Develop and test disruptive technologies such as carbon capture, use and storage and other innovative carbon technologies
