Charah Solutions has opened a facility at the Port of Coeymans using new patented technologies for grinding granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) to create supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The company expects to produce as little as 30,000 tonnes or more than 100,000 tonnes profitably.
Charah, a provider of maintenance services, is using grinding mills to serve customers in areas where the supply of fly ash or other SCMs is limited. Additionally, the technology can also be used for grinding natural pozzolans to create additional SCMs to replace fly ash.
The facility will manufacture MultiCem - a brand of slag cement which is produced by grinding GBFS, a byproduct of steel production. It can also be added in the production of concrete and cement.
MultiCem will be distributed throughout the company's MultiSource network, a distribution system of more than 30 sourcing locations which provides a continuous supply of SCMs, including quality fly ash and slag cement.
Charles Price, president and CEO of Charah Solutions, says the company expects to install more facilities nationwide.
Port of Coeymans is a marine terminal located 10 miles south of Albany, New York, and 100 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River. It accessible by ship, truck, and rail.
