Dozens of residents are opposing plans to expand a rock quarry over the Kentucky River and into Clark County, according to a report by Fox56.
The report says the Allen Company wanted to re-zone its land along Highway 627 in Clark County from agriculture to heavy industry with the aim of creating a pit mine less than a mile away from its other active mines. This proposal was rejected by the Clark County Planning and Zoning Commission.
The commission went on to reject another proposal for the mine to become an underground mine, but this decision was overridden by the Clark County Fiscal Court. Members of the Southwest Clark Neighbourhood Association have been opposing to the decision with neighbours insisting they live in the impact zone of the proposal.
The association appealed the decision to the Circuit Court and Kentucky Court of Appeals – all of which were denied.
Deborah Garrison, association president, says: "We believe the operation will be detrimental to our health, to our safety, and to our property which has already been devalued.”
The association says the constant dust in the air and noise of a 165-acre expansion into nearby land would put residents in dangerous circumstances.
