Alaska's Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has selected Granite Construction in a $51 million contract to upgrade the Seward Highway between MP 75 near the bottom of Turnagain Pass, and MP 90 near the Girdwood intersection, in Spring 2018. The project intends to straighten curves in high-accident locations, improving intersections and allowing for more passing opportunities.
Granite will carry out phase one of the project which will cover MP 75 to 77.7 and MP 81 to 90.
Additionally, the contract includes drainage and shore protection improvements, road resurfacing realignment, new passing lanes, enhanced pedestrian facilities, and the rehabilitation or replacement of the Ingram Creek Bridge, Peterson Creek Bridge, Virgin Creek Bridge, and Glacier Creek Bridge.
DOT&PF is working with the Federal Highway Administration to rehabilitate 15 miles of the highway. The agreement plans to replace eight bridges, adding five miles of new passing lanes as well as a new parking area for improving access for the hooligan fishery. It also aims to enhance recreational access at Placer River and Portage Creek.
Construction is scheduled to conclude in Fall 2020, however, dates are projected and subject to change, based on availability of funding and other factors
