Komatsu and Nvidia partner on AI to improve operational safety

December 15, 2017

Komatsu and Nvidia have formed a partnership to improve the safety and productivity of construction jobsite operations through artificial intelligence.

As part of the agreement, Komatsu will introduce its Smartconstruction strategy to Nvidia's GPUs, which will communicate with drones from Skycatch which will collect 3D images, generate terrain data and visualize site conditions. Optim will provide an application to correlate terrain data to jobsite workers and construction machines for visualization.

Nvidia's Jetson is installed in the construction machines and will provide 360-degree images through the company’s cloud technology, enabling prompt recognition of workers and other machines. It will also aim to provide 360-degree images, allowing prompt recognition of workers and other machines nearby, thereby preventing dangerous contacts and collisions.

Jetson will also be used with stereo camera in the cabs construction equipment to recognise changing job site conditions in real-time and to provide instructions to machine operators.
