Lafarge Canada is using Svante’s equipment to capture flue gas at its Richmond cement plant as part of the second stage of Project CO2MENT.
Lafarge says the project provides an opportunity to evaluate the potential for a new business model for supplying industrial post-combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) to the existing CO2 market as well as assessing the economic feasibility of newly developed CO2 utilisation technologies.
The system purifies the cement flue gas by trapping its contaminants to enable an efficient and durable CO2 capture process, the company adds.
Svante’s CEO Claude Letourneau says: ’Svante offers the cement industry a commercially viable way to capture large-scale CO2 emissions from existing infrastructure at half the capital cost of traditional solutions. We are poised to help our customers transition to a net-neutral carbon future by making industrial-scale carbon capture a reality today.’’
The third phase of CO2MENT will demonstrate CO2 utilisation technologies such as reinjecting it into low-carbon fuels, CO2 concrete and fly ash in 2020.
