LafargeHolcim is to spend $114m modernizing the Martres-Tolosane cement plant in south-west France.
It is the largest project in financial terms by the group in France in 40 years. The upgrade with will a new kiln for clinker will increase the plant’s productivity and reduce its environmental impact.
“This investment reaffirms not only our confidence in the competitive energy and longevity of French industry, but also out commitment to an environmentally conscious method of production, using circular economy strategy to make best use of our resources,” said Bénédicte de Bonnechose, chief executive, Lafarge France.
The modernization will enable the recycling and recovery of waste, helping the Martres-Tolosane plant to reduce its energy consumption and CO2 footprint using alternative fuels.
Works will begin in 2018 and be completed in mid-2020. The aim is that by that point the plant will be running on 80% alternative fuels, in line with the group’s 2030 plan sustainability strategy.
