MSHA awards grants to five mines to improve safety

September 19, 2019

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has awarded five grants totalling $400,000 to five US mines to help prevent unsafe working conditions, says WPXI News.

MSHA is providing the funding via its Brookwood-Sago grant programme. The recipients include Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas; Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania; the United Mine Workers of America Career Centers in Prosperity, Pennsylvania; the University of Arizona in Tucson; and West Virginia University Research Corp. in Morgantown.

The Brookwood-Sago grant programme was established in 2006 to honour 25 miners who died in Brookwood, Alabama, at the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine and in Buckhannon, West Virginia, at the Sago Mine.
