MSHA: mechanic falls 10 feet from a portable cone crusher

July 13, 2018

A mechanic fell 10 feet from a portable cone crusher and struck his head on the machine before landing on the ground, says the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

The MSHA has issued best practice guidelines following the incident which took place on the 16 June.

Best Practices:
  • Establish and discuss safe work procedures before beginning work. Identify and control all hazards associated with the work to be performed and ensure a means of safe access is available when working on equipment.
  • Ensure proper fall protection is used when miners are exposed to a fall hazard.
  • Train miners in the use and care of fall protection equipment.  Provide ladders, mechanical lifts, and/or other safe access means when a safe access is not available.  Ensure secure footing in all work areas.
