Self-driving car technology could increase miner safety, MSHA investigates

June 29, 2018

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is attempting to understand if technology developed for self-driving cars could be used to increase safety for miners.

According to the US Department of Labor’s Blog, smart technology such as seat belt interlock systems could help boost safety for miners. In addition, collision avoidance systems use electromagnetic energy to sense the presence of vehicles and people and alert the operator before an accident takes place.

The technology could be used to help reduce collisions at surface mines, where haul trucks have blind sports that extend hundreds of feet.

The report says, the MSHA is now seeking quality and comprehensive information.

“MSHA is seeking to solicit quality and comprehensive information. Representatives will be attending meetings and discussions with stakeholders across the country, including mine operators, equipment manufacturers, trade associations, and miners’ representatives,” the report adds.
