UK rail freight operator Freightliner and Rail Freight Services together with Tarmac have oponed a new rail depot inside Freightliner's existing Garston complex.
The Tarmac Garston project, approximately just five miles from Liverpool City Centre, is intended to support long term employment in the locality, both directly on the site itself and via the supply chain whilst supplying materials for use in a wide range of infrastructure projects across the region, including the newly constructed Mersey Gateway project.
The operation created by the partnership will receive up to 300,000 tonnes of aggregates a year for supply to Tarmac customers in Merseyside and Cheshire.
Adam Cunliffe, UK managing director, Freightliner said: “Garston is one of Freightliner’s most established terminals and has seen a steady increase in rail-hauled container traffic over the last five years. The introduction of this new aggregates workflow will bring added environmental as well as economic benefits to Liverpool and the surrounding North West region.”
Richard Kirwin, area director, Tarmac said the new depot was part of the group’s aim to increase the movement of material by rail and support the drive toward more efficient, sustainable transport and a lower carbon environment.
Tarmac is one of the UK’s largest private sector users of rail freight transporting nine million tonnes of material by rail across the country each year.
