1707 Aggregate Industries has been selected to exclusively supply sub-base aggregate for flood defence works at the Strood Waterfront Project in Medway, Kent, south-east England.

The ambitious redevelopment scheme to revamp the Strood riverside will see the construction of up to 1,600 new homes, as well as new business premises and recreational space, across the stretch from Jane’s Creek to the Riverside Tavern.

As part of the mammoth project, around £3.5 million has been earmarked for flood defence works to ensure all new structures are adequately protected from the risk of flooding.

Earlier this year, Aggregate Industries was chosen as the supplier of choice by contractors Ovenden Earth Moving and Volker Stevin after demonstrating the ability to provide high volumes of quality specified aggregate within tight time frames. All materials from Glensanda and Isle of Grain were required to go through detailed physical assessments for compliance and assurance of supply. Additional testing plans were implemented on the supply to review the consistency of material giving further quality assurance.

So far, the company has already supplied 90,000 tonnes of 6F4 Granite starting at the end of July, with a further 30,000 tonnes expected to be delivered in the coming months. The flood defence works are expected to conclude by July 2019.

With a number of quarries connected to distribution centres by an efficient, reliable, low carbon logistics infrastructure, Aggregate Industries is able to offer exceptional customer service, and its’ South East team is utilising its well-placed aggregate terminal at Isle of Grain in Kent to ensure a consistent, efficient supply to the Strood development. The leading construction materials supplier will also make the most of its partnership with specifically trained Non-Tipping Trucks (NTTs) and artic haulage fleet, to deliver more than 1,250 tonnes/day.

Mark Willshee, director at Aggregate Industries, adds: “I’m delighted that Aggregate Industries has been chosen to supply the flood defence works on this highly prestigious redevelopment of the Strood riverside. Our aim over the coming months will be to do what we do best; deliver the highest quality subbase aggregate in the quickest and most efficient way possible.”

Chris Barwick, managing director at Ovenden Earth Moving, said: “We are pleased to have Aggregate Industries on board as our supplier of choice on this major flood defence project. Over the last year, the Aggregate Industries’ South East team has demonstrated that they have the top-grade aggregate, technical advice, extensive supply capabilities and the local delivery network needed to support the world class execution of this complex project. We look forward to further developing our working relationship in the future.”

Councillor Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council, said: “The flood defence works are the first step in the transformation of Strood Waterfront. This project is paving the way for future development of the site including hundreds of homes, including affordable housing, in a fantastic location with breath-taking views across the river to Rochester Castle and is close to two railway stations. The work to transform Strood Waterfront also compliments the ongoing Local Growth Fund works in Strood Town Centre. The regeneration for Strood will provide growth for all and reaffirm that Strood is a great place to live, work, learn and visit.”

With extensive experience in food and fluvial protection, Aggregate Industries offers a wide range of products and SuDS drainage solutions including aggregates, block paving, asphalt and concrete.
