The guide also highlights those entries where the application of a new process, system or investment has helped to mitigate one of the six high consequence hazards in the Mineral Products industry that have been identified as being responsible for 94% of the fatalities within the industry – 'The Fatal 6'.
Nigel Jackson, chief executive MPA, said: "The theme of the 2019 MPA Health and Safety Conference was 'Clearer, Simpler, Smarter'. 'Sharing good practice 2019/20' is an exemplar of this. The entries demonstrate some simple but innovative ways of eliminating hazards in the workplace or clever solutions to problems achieved by individuals working together with a clarity of purpose, to make their work environment safer. Please ensure that you review the entries with your colleagues to see if they can be applied within your own organisation.
"Over the years, the sharing and application by others of the innovations that have been submitted to the MPA Health and Safety Awards have helped to prevent hundreds of serious injuries and, I am sure, fatalities within the industry. Many ideas that were showcased at the MPA Health & Safety Awards have been so widely adopted; they have now become standard industry practice. The sharing and celebrating of innovations in health and safety have played a key role in helping the industry improve its safety performance.
"Sadly, the disruption to all our operations created by COVID-19 led MPA to defer the Awards this year. However, in the interim, I am delighted to announce that British Precast has agreed to combine its awards ceremony with MPA's. Together, we have taken this as an opportunity to review the categories used for the entries, the submission process and how the entries are judged. Based on the feedback from members and judges, we will shortly be announcing some significant improvements. This will make it easier to complete the submissions, and I am sure, encourage even more organisations to participate."
