Spanish consumption of cement down to 1966 level

Cement consumption in Spain during the first three months of 2012 sank to the lowest level since 1966.

Consumption between 1 January and 31 March was down 31.3% compared to the same period of 2011. According to the cement producers' association, 4303 Oficemen, the industry faces a harsh future, with Spain once again in recession. The other industries depending on the cement sector will also suffer, said Oficemen.

Other figures revealed that during the first quarter of 2012, unemployment in the construction industry reached 29%, while the number of people within the industry registered at the Inland Revenue offices has decreased by 54% since January 2008. Moreover, during the first four months of the year, production of cement decreased by 27% to 5.7million tonnes, while demand in Spain went down by 33.8% to 4.7million tonnes.
