Geopipe, a US company using Machine Learning to create copies of urban reality and generate digital models, has won the 'Best Pitch’ prize in a construction startup competition.

The competition was launched in April by the venture capital unit of 643 CEMEX and challenged startups in construction technology (Constructech) to lead innovation in the sector.

Entrants competed to gain access to CEMEX Ventures’ investment portfolio. They were evaluated on criteria including the level of innovation, the escalating potential, and the solution offered to the construction industry.

The seven finalists came from Colombia, Egypt, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore and the US. They attended a three-day event in Madrid where a jury of multidisciplinary industry experts evaluated their projects. The judges included construction, technology, innovation and entrepreneurial leaders.

All of the finalists have continued negotiations with CEMEX Ventures for access to its investment portfolio.

In addition to Best Pitch winner Geopipe, the other projects in the final included Knowify which focuses on maximising contractor productivity. Licify has developed a platform that facilitates biddings, while Smart Build Asia utilises disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Big Data.

Airsquire showcased its plan verification tool, while Handaz presented a tool to convert computer aided design (CAD) plans into building information modelling (BIM) models. Mexico-based Os City featured its crowdsourced Artificial Intelligence platform developed for smart cities.

Launched in 2017, CEMEX Ventures focuses on helping to overcome the main challenges and capitalising on the opportunity areas in the construction ecosystem through sustainable solutions.
