USGS reports dip in cement shipments

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the US and Puerto Rico in August 2024 were an estimated 9.93 million tonnes, an 8.9% decrease from shipments in the same month last year.

Shipments for the year to 31 August totalled an estimated 68.5 million tonnes, a 5.8% decrease from those in August 2023. Of the total blended tonnage reported, 38.3 million tonnes (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); Texas was the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage.  

In August 2024, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida, and Alabama were the leading producing states for portland and blended cement. In descending order, the leading cement-consuming States (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Georgia) received 38.3% of August shipments. 

Masonry cement shipments totalled an estimated 193,000 tonnes in August 2024, a 6.7% decrease from August 2023. Shipments for the year through August totalled an estimated 1.51 million tonnes, a decrease of 6.6% from those in the same period in 2023. The leading masonry-cement-consuming States in August 2024 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, California, Georgia, and North Carolina; these States received 59.6% of August shipments. 

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totalled an estimated 6.52 million tonnes in August 2024, a 5.1% decrease from August 2023. Production for the year through August totalled an estimated 46.8 million tonnes, a 6.4% decrease from August 2023. In descending order, the leading clinker-producing States in August 2024 were Missouri, Texas, California, Florida, and Alabama.
