473 Volvo Construction Equipment has produced an eye-catching infographic explaining how with its millions of workers and hundreds and thousands of active sites, quarrying and aggregates processing is one of the biggest and most important industries in the world.

Compiled out of data from numerous official sources, including Persistence Market Research, Future Market Insights (FMI), Euromines, and G.A.I.N (Global Aggregates Information Network), the infographic states that the 4 million plus employee-strong quarrying and aggregates industry is predicted to be worth US$468.2bn by 2024 – with market growth of 6.8% forecast between 2018-2026.

Around 50 billion tons of aggregates are produced globally each year by approximately 500,000 extraction sites worldwide. China was the top aggregates producer in 2017. Despite the giant scale of worldwide aggregates production, there is only an average distance of 50 miles between where aggregates are extracted and subsequently used. Around 110 tons of aggregates are needed to build an average new home.

The infographic states that Volvo Construction Equipment’s Electric Site project could, if rolled out in quarries globally, cut onsite carbon emissions by 95%.
