Philippines-based Northern Cement Corp (NCC) has started the US$200 million expansion of its Pangasinan plant, as part of an aggressive plan by San Miguel Corp (SMC) to increase its cement capacity.

SMC is working on a cement expansion drive worth $1 billion to expand its capacity by 10 million tonnes to 16 million tonnes, according to Ramon S Ang, president of NCC. NCC’s Pangasinan plant expansion will increase its cement capacity to over 2 million tonnes/year. The company has bought the newest manufacturing technologies for its existing lines, as it works on the completion of a modernisation programme.

Philippines: Ang seriously looking into acquisition of Lafarge's cement plants

In the Philippines, businessman Ramon Ang is said to have announced that he is giving serious consideration to the acquisition of Lafarge Republic cement plants.

Ang did not mention if either Eagle Cement or San Miguel were showing interest in buying the local assets of Lafarge.

Ang, who is Eagle Cement's chairman and San Miguel's president, is reported as saying that they are seriously assessing the planned acquisition and it will be a huge transaction if it happens.

Philippines: San Miguel adds three new cement plants in expansion drive

The Philippines-based San Miguel Corporation is adding a further three cement factories as part of its expansion drive.

This would increase the group's proposed cement manufacturing investment to nearly US$1 billion (€881.95 million).

In July 2015, San Miguel announced it is to invest US$800 million in two cement factories that are due for completion in 2017.

Cement plant capacity expansion in Philippines to grow steadily

Over the four years from 2014 to 2017, the higher demand for cement in the Philippines will be met as the expansion of cement plant capacity is projected to increase steadily.

This was according to a survey by University of Santo Tomas' Professor Antoinette Rosete, using published sources.

As projected by Professor Rosete, domestic cement demand is expected to continue growing over the four years to come, to 27 million tonnes in 2017.
