Norwegian government-owned carbon capture and storage company Gassnova, and Norwegian manufacturer of cement Norcem, have entered into an agreement concerning a study about carbon capture that will be undertaken at Norcem's facility in Brevik.

The study will use technology developed by Norwegian oil company Aker Solutions. Gassnova will finance the study.

The study will investigate how a carbon capture facility can be integrated with Norcem's existing factory and how carbon dioxide can be handled and stored for transportation.

Per Brevik, director alternate fuels at Norcem's parent company 674 HeidelbergCement, says that the study will form the basis for deciding whether to construct a full-scale carbon capture facility.

He adds that it is expected that 400,000tonnes of carbon dioxide can be captured by a full-scale facility annually. This corresponds to half the factory's emissions.

Danish engineering company FL Smidth, Norwegian engineering company Norconsult, and Telemark University College, will also participate in the study.

A final report will be delivered in May, 2016.
