Finnish research on concrete problems caused by salt

The impact of adding a copper mix to concrete to bind chlorides in concrete structures preventing salt damage is being examined in Scandanavia. Researcher Markku Leivo, of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, says the life of concrete structures afflicted by salt could be as much as doubled due to this method.

The impact of adding a copper mix to concrete to bind chlorides in concrete structures preventing salt damage is being examined in Scandanavia.

Researcher Markku Leivo, of 4251 VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, says the life of concrete structures afflicted by salt could be as much as doubled due to this method.

Long-term tests are due to be completed in May 2012, with the method already granted an international patent at the beginning of this year.

Road salt causes problems for the durability of the edge beams and pillars of bridges, in particular. There are also problems in port quays and in many marine structures.
