The toll road project is part of a government initiative to boost Sumatra’s development, and is the first highway to be built in Lampung province.
The Volvo excavators are being used on the 140.9km Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar section of the toll toad. The full 2,800km-long Trans-Sumatra Toll Road will connect Lampung in the south to Aceh in the north, running along the east of Sumatra Island. Indonesian President Joko Widodo launched the project to support the 2018 Asian Games, which takes place in the country from 18 August to 2 September.
“With the ambitious goal of completing sections of the toll road ahead of the Asian Games in August, we recommended the high performing, fuel-efficient EC210D to help the contractors meet their tight deadline,” said Acok Yustanto, director of PT Teladan Langgeng Jaya, a Lampung-based heavy-equipment rental company that leased the excavators to contractors on the toll road project. The company purchased the excavators from PT. Indotruck Utama, Volvo’s distribution partner in the Sumatra region.
The EC210D excavators are helping to load and unload 1,200 tons of stones to build the base course of the toll road. Working between five to 12 hours a day, depending on the rain, the excavators also help with land preparation work and lifting materials for the road construction. Scheduled for completion in 2019, the Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar toll road is intended to boost the local economy by making it easier for tourists and businesses to access Lampung.
The EC210D crawler excavator features a maximum bucket capacity of 1.22 m3, a maximum slew speed of 12.3 r/min, a maximum slew torque of 76.7 kNm, and is equipped with the Volvo D5E engine.
The excavator can be equipped with either a top or side mounted Volvo hydraulic breaker, designed to break the most demanding materials.
