The Albanian government has announced that it has reached an agreement for development of a new cement plant in part of the national forest. Under the plan, Gener-2 will develop a cement plant and lightweight block manufacturing facility on the site.

Germany-based Dyckerhoff is reported to be planning to invest a total of €300million in upgrading a cement plant in the Ukraine, in which it has a majority share. Under the plan the Volyn plant will be improved with new production technology, upgraded kilns and a new packaging plant, as well as a switch from gas to coal power. So far the company has invested €70million of the total figure at the plant and around €14.6million is allocated for work during 2010.

Construction work on a new cement plant was set to restart this month a year after the project was mothballed. Construction of Atcom’s new plant in Crimea, Ukraine started in March last year but was halted in summer 2009. The company said that foundation work on the plant was set to be started in July. The first stage of the 1.5million tonne plant is expected to be commissioned in early 2012 and will help the group increase cement supply to the region by 25%. A second stage that will raise production to 2.1

Following the acquisition of Béton Saône in Mâcon, France last year, Cemex has announced that it is to invest €300,000 to improve the aggregate storage facilities at the Burgundy plant. The company has already upgraded the site with an €560,000 investment in the ready mixed concrete plant which has increased capacity from 35 to 60m3 per hour.

Turkey-based ICDAS has announced plans to invest around €150million in developing a new 2.5million tonne cement plant in the north west region of Turkey. No further details about implementation of the plan have been released but the announcement coincides with another by the company to also invest in energy projects in Turkey.

Construction of a new cancer centre in Germany has called for concrete not only to provide structural support but also protection against radiation. From 2010 up to 3000 patients a year will be able to undergo innovative particle therapy cancer treatment at a new specialist centre currently under construction in Marburg, Germany. The centre - only the third of its kind in the world - will use protons and carbon ions to treat tumours that would normally be difficult to combat using conventional medical techn

Investment in a new ready mixed concrete plant and improvements to an existing quarry will help Cemex to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Austria by nearly 1000tonnes per year. The new plant at the Hollitzer quarry is located 50km from Vienna and features five state-of-the-art cement silos, a new recycling facility, and a recreational centre for employees.

The Uzbekistan government and Omani Investment Fund have announced plans to form a joint venture to develop a new €250million cement plant. Work on the 1.7million tonne capacity facility is expected to start in 2011 with completion planned in 2014. The government has said that it plans to develop six cement plants to raise the countries total cement production by 10million tonnes per year to 12million tonnes.

Lafarge is reported to be planning to build new cement plants in the Kaluga and Rostov regions of Russia. It is suggested that work on the Kaluga plant could start this year. The company has recently taken control of the Voskresenskcement plant in the Moscow region and Uralcement in the Chelyabinsk region and could be planning further acquisitions to expand its presences in Russia.
