The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has confirmed it has now certified 80,000 active concrete field testing technicians. The institute says the record numbers follows a trend of certification numbers increasing to meet the growing demands of the concrete industry.
John Nehasil, managing director, certification, ACI, says: “We’ve never had a qualified workforce this big before. It means there are more people on the jobsites who are certified to do the job correctly – assuring testing is performed correctly, giving confidence in the test results, and improving quality control.”
According to ACI, the Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification is the most popular programme and has certified more than 250,000 field testing technicians.
The Grade I certification is presented to professionals who can properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.
These tests include Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete, Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete, Sump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete, Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete and Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method. Other Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method and Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field.

ACI says the certification comprises a written and performance exam which is valid for five years. The certification is offered through ACI's global network of more than 120 sponsoring groups in the local concrete communities.
