The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has expanded its mission to reflect its approach to advocating the global adoption of ACI standards as well as dedicating additional resources to advance the acceptance of its consensus-based knowledge. The plan is aimed at assisting global concrete industry professionals to manage increasing requirements for the design and construction of concrete structures.
ACI also continues to work with the International Code Council to ensure that concrete design and concrete repair provisions are adequately referenced in the International Building Code and International Existing Building Code. It also carries on its work with state and local jurisdictions to reference the Institute’s standards.
Ronald G. Burg, PE, executive vice president, ACI, said: “The change to ACI’s mission reflects a transformational change to taking an active role in advancing the adoption of its concrete knowledge. While our member experts will continue to use our consensus-based process to develop standards based on new research, global best practices, and innovative technologies, we are building a new infrastructure that will increase global adoption of this state-of-the-art information.”
Additionally, ACI has formed a partnership with the Saudi Arabia-based Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization to develop a Gulf Building Code based on ACI’s Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318). In addition, it has been working with officials from Vietnam to translate ACI 318 and other documents for use in the country.
