Officials from Asphalt Specialties presented plans to quarry rock to turn into asphalt on 15 acres on a swath of land southwest of where Interstate 80 and Harriman Road meet – according to a report by Wyoming News. The event, held at Little America, featured around two dozen Laramie residents who expressed concerns on trucks coming in and out of the area 160 times per day.
Gary Stillmunkes, Asphalt’s business manager, stated that there would be water to keep dust from raining down, modern equipment as well as a prominent ride to mitigate the noise and that speeding trucks with minerals would not be allowed.
In addition, Chris Lidstone, Asphalt’s water resources consultant, said the quarry posed minimal risk to the region’s water and wells and that the company would be liable for any damage.
Ron Kailey, Laramie county commissioner, said that the power to regulate quarries resides with the Wyoming Department of Environment, which is currently reviewing the application.
