CalPortland commissions finish mill at cement plant in California

March 27, 2019

CalPortland is commissioning a finish cement grind mill and distribution system to help improve shipping and production at its cement plant in Oro Grande, California.

Steve Regis, senior vice president corporate services, CalPortland, says the finish mill and distribution system will help provide the industry with the additional supply required for necessary rehabilitation and rapidly developing infrastructure in California and Nevada.

The scope of the $58.5 million project includes the construction of the finish ball mill and two new cement shipping lanes with two distribution silos.

According to CalPortland, this Polysius two compartment mill comes with a production capacity of 200 short tonnes per hour and is equipped with a motor and seperator technology as well as cement cooler design technology. The system utilises mechanical conveyance (bucket elevator to convey finished products to the new silos, reducing an additional 500 HP of energy requirement.

The project is part of a partial plant modernisation programme that was originally completed in 2008, prior to the acquisition of the facility by CalPortland in 2015.

The project began in January 2018 and was constructed by general contractor Thyssen Krupp and sub-contractor TIC (The Industrial Company), in collaboration with CalPortland’s engineering services team.
