Cemex takes two Energy Star awards

June 1, 2017

Cemex's San Diego and La Mirada terminals have each reduced energy consumption by more than 10%.

The two Cemex USA terminals have achieved the US Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Challenge for Industry by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy conservation.

The terminals, in San Diego and La Mirada, California, each reduced their energy consumption by more than 10 percent.

In 2016, Cemex USA conducted pilot programs at its California terminals to cut energy use. The San Diego terminal achieved a noteworthy 12.2% reduction in 2016, compared to the prior year. The La Mirada terminal achieved an impressive 23.2% reduction year-over-year.

The Energy Star Challenge for Industry is a national call-to-action to improve energy efficiency by 10% within five years. The Cemex terminals achieved it in one year.

“Our La Mirada and San Diego terminals are leading the way in conservation for our Logistics team, and we are very proud of the effort they’ve put into achieving the Energy Star Challenge for Industry,” said Matt Wild, executive vice president – logistics, Cemex USA.

The La Mirada and San Diego terminals reduced their energy consumption by completing projects and executing strategies to improve their onsite energy intensity. Workers were educated on energy-management practices and procedures for the proper operation of plant equipment. Outdated light bulbs at the terminals were replaced with more energy-efficient LED lighting. The process of enhancing lighting at the terminals continues in 2017, and workers at the terminals are focused on looking for more ways to save energy in the future. Cemex also plans to roll out a similar program to all of its Logistics operations.

“At Cemex, we are committed to sustainable business practices across our operations and to building a better future for the communities in which we live and work,” said Ignacio Madridejos, president, Cemex USA. “It’s truly an honor to receive this recognition from the EPA and Energy Star, and we look forward to many more years of participation in this important program.”

Cemex is a corporate partner of the Energy Star program and is an active proponent of the importance of energy efficiency. Energy Star is an EPA program that delivers environmental benefits and financial value through superior energy efficiency and focuses on strategic energy management and the importance of demonstrating environmental leadership for future generations.
