Cemex USA has launched its Safety Week 2019 initiative as part of its commitment to improving workplace safety and employee health under the Zero4Life ambition.
Ignacio Madridejos, Cemex USA president, says: “We are relentless in our goal to achieve Zero4Life—zero recordable injuries, job-related illnesses, preventable vehicle accidents and environmental events. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and Safety Week encourages all our employees to take action to make our work environments safer.”
Cemex USA plants and facilities stopped for 60-90 minutes on 7 Jan so employees could participate in safety stand downs to review safety initiatives from 2018 and discuss potential improvements.
During the stand downs, employees were encouraged to become safety experts using the tools provided in the company's Health & Safety Management System—a programme based on 14 different elements including leadership, audits and inspections, safe operative practices and risk analysis.
Guillermo Martinez, Cemex USA’s executive vice president, human resources and communications, says the programme is designed to give employees what they need to identify potential hazards and makes changes that benefit them and their colleagues.
Additionally, Cemex USA is to hold a range of activities including specialised training to increase safety awareness.
Alan MacVicar, Cemex USA’s vice president of health & safety, says: “By using tools they already know and becoming experts, potential safety risks can be fixed as soon as they are identified.”
