Limestone shipments on the Great Lakes of 26.3 million tons in 2016 were 9.3% down on the previous year, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association.
Loadings in 2016 were also 5.3% below the trade’s five-year average, it said.
Loadings from US quarries were 21.4 million tons, down nearly 13% compared to 2015. Shipments from US quarries also trailed their five-year average by 8.6%.
Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 5 million tons, an increase of 10.5% over 2015 and 12.4% better than their five-year average, the association said.
